Timeball Tower (code 056)
Watercolour painting of the Timeball Tower in Deal.  The first permanent structure
on the tower site was built in 1796 during the French wars.  In 1853 the Deal Tower
was chosen to bear a new apparatus.  This was the Timeball.  It gave only one message
once a day at 1 o'clock.  A Galvanic impulse initiated by the Greenwich observatory caused the 
ball to drop from its elevated position giving observers an accurate time check.  
 
The original is now sold.
